Agriculture
Northern Alberta's agricultural industry is a vibrant component of our prosperity. Presently we are home to over 11,000 farms that generate close to $1 Billion in annual revenues. Our farmers' efforts are helped by 2,900 hours of sunshine each year (18 hours per day during the peak growing season) and 95 frost free-days.
Employment opportunities in the agricultural industry range from general farm work to farm management, crop research, accounting, food processing, sales and distribution. High demand jobs include agricultural/heavy equipment mechanics, and animal health technologists and veterinarians.
Crops and value-added products include: wheat, canola, corn, flax, barley, peas, alfalfa, chickpeas, lentils, cheese, pasta and honey. Livestock production includes: cattle, hogs, elk, poultry, sheep, and bison, as well as specialty meats such as llama, mink, ostrich, and chinchilla.
